PART ONE

The basement’s dark – darker than the usual suburban basement dankness Harris calls home. Perfect for a still evil, make that very evil, creature of the night looking to make off with some cash, maybe find something he can pawn amongst the geek crap.

Geek crap is all Spike finds. Geek crap and bad clothing – he can’t see the patterns but he knows they’re hideous, not something he wants to be caught dead in, again.

He’ll never get out of here at this rate, bloody Harris. He flicks on the light.

Bloody Harris is right. Not so much bloody as here. Here lying motionless on the bed looking very dead except as he gets closer Spike can hear a heartbeat.

Disappointing. He could have eaten a dead Harris.

Harris is flushed and sweaty, and not as disgusting as he should look in that condition. He also hasn’t reacted to the light so Spike could riffle more but he’s bored. Shakes Harris’ shoulder instead.

“Mmm. Not getting up, mom. No school. Tell Captain Warp Six.”

Spike grits his teeth, and tries to sound like he cares, “Don’t need to get up, just tell me where your wallet is and I’ll take care of it.”

“Take care of? Good.” Harris rubs his forehead. “It’s in my … wait, Spike?”

He sits up, looks at Spike, then collapses down again. Spike sighs. There goes that plan.

“I can’t believe you’re here stealing from me. I gave you shelter and …” Harris waves his hand at Spike in what could be an admonishment but is more like a flail.

“I’m evil. Course I’m here to rob you.” Spike glares at Harris, then at the unlucrative basement. “Would help if you had anything worth nicking.”

“You should talk, crypt-boy. At least I …” Harris winces and his eyes flutter closed.

All the trailing off is annoying, least Harris could do is be awake for Spike to insult. “What’s wrong with you? Why aren’t those friends of yours playing nursemaid?”

“Sick, throat hurts. Called. Phone too far.” He gestures at the phone. The answering machine message light is flashing.

Spike drops onto the bed beside Harris. Might as well make himself comfortable, nothing else to do.

“Water? ‘m thirsty.” Harris’s eyes are fixed on Spike, big and puppy-like. Spike raises an eyebrow. “Please?”

He snorts. “Yeah, that’ll melt my dead heart.”

He’s still getting the pleading puppy eyes. “C’mon Spike.”

“What do I look like, a nurse? White’s not my color.”

There’s shifting and grumbling into the pillow, before Harris rolls to his side. “Fine. I’ll pay you.” His hand hits Spike’s shoulder, only it’s more like a tap and the hand stays there. Spike can feel the warmth through his coat.

“I like money.” He reaches for the water.

***

He wakes up feeling warmer than he has in years. Spike’s about to close his eyes again when he registers who he’s wrapped around like some love-struck girl. Bloody Harris.

He watches his hand reach up and feel Harris’ forehead. The fever’s down. But there’d better be something wrong with Spike.

He’s off the bed and in his duster before Harris sits up and stares at his with a glazed look.

Harris pops a pill in his mouth, swallows it down with the now reachable water. “Leaving before getting paid?”

“Paid. Right.” Spike pulls a hand out of a pocket, holds it out. “Pay up, then. Don’t have all night.”

Harris sighs and leans back against a pillow. “Pocket of my coat.” He points behind Spike.

The money now in his pocket, Spike makes for the door. Doesn’t look back to see if Harris is alright. “Want the light off?”

“Nah, leave it on.”

The door’s closing behind Spike when he hears his name. He pauses, hand on the doorknob and then lets the door shut. He goes out into the night, doesn’t stop until he’s back in his crypt.

Part Two is here.

I'm pleased you picked out that line because it's my favourite! :D And that's lovely to hear about it being in character and believable - something I always strive for! Yay for enjoying the banter!! Thanks so much Sue! :D

:snorfle: Damn that nurturer in Spike that just won't go away. heee...
Money and warmth, way to a cold vamp's heart. This was very believable hon, well done!

I'm pleased that you enjoyed, and were amused by reluctant nurturer Spike. Yep, money and warmth are definitely good ways to get to a vamp! Thanks for your lovely comment! *g*

Awww, Spike is so the love-struck girl, even though he's being all petulant and steal-y. :D I like Xander's stop-and-start of speaking as he loses the energy to finish sentences, and how Spike gets frustrated as much with Xander's inability to banter with him as is customary between them as he is that he can't find cash or goods to hock.

And that's right, Spike has to high tail it out of there before he checks Xander for fever again. Hee! Very in-character, slip-it-right-into-canon interaction here, with some nice hints of other kinds of heat besides Xander's flushed face that could develop between them.

Oh yay! Your comment makes me very happy!! One of the things I love about Spike's character is that he thinks he's all tough and evil (and obviously he's not totally wrong in that belief) but he also can be a big softie - a love-struck girl! I really adore "Lover's Walk" because of how we see all these aspects of his personality.

I'm pleased that you enjoyed Xander losing energy when he talked and Spike's unhappiness with Xander not being able to banter with him. I'm happy that you enjoyed Spike high tailing it out there. I'm very delighted by this:

Yes, I just dorkily quoted back what you said! Thanks for the lovely comment! :D

Excellent voices and I loved the situation. Spike snuggling with a sick Xander just makes me grin. This made me laugh out loud:

“Please?”

He snorts. “Yeah, that’ll melt my dead heart.”

He’s still getting the pleading puppy eyes. “C’mon Spike.”

“What do I look like, a nurse? White’s not my color.”

Thanks for the entertaining read.

That's right Spike. No matter what, never blur the lines between business and pleasure;)

heee - yes, it's very important to keep those lines separate! Thanks!! :D

This is fantastic. I had a grin on my face the whole way through. Ahahahaha! Can you believe I actually read some fic? It's been a while since I started neglecting ol' Buffyverse.

I really love the way that you write Spike (I just wrote that as Spoike, I must be channeling Dru) in general, but here are some of my favorite lines:

Geek crap and bad clothing – he can’t see the patterns but he knows they’re hideous, not something he wants to be caught dead in, again.

Disappointing. He could have eaten a dead Harris.

“Mmm. Not getting up, mom. No school. Tell Captain Warp Six.”

Spike’s about to close his eyes again when he registers who he’s wrapped around like some love-struck girl. Bloody Harris.

Hope everything is going well for you and I'm wishing you a fabulous week!

Wheeee! I'm so happy that you're reading fic again, and am so pleased that you enjoyed this! For another fic I'm working on, I hadn't been feeling the Spike voice recently and then I wrote this and it just clicked - so I'm delighted that it works for you!

Oooh, yay for quotes! Thanks for letting me know your favourite lines. :D

It's a busy week but the gf arrives on Friday for a visit so all is good!! I hope yours is going well! *smooches and smoothes*

mmm, man-nurse!spike! hee! that i would pay to see. this was so sweet! i wonder, is it the natural instincts of spike, or xander's irresistable charms that get him his way?

I loved the geek crap! that's totally what spike would see. but secretly, xander's stuff would probably be worth a lot of money on ebay, huh?

I loved that he pauses at the door, but keeps on going. and i loved that after he'd gone, xander probably thought it was some kind of hallucination for at least a little while. now i'm imagining the conversation they'd have once he got well again, lol.

heee, man-nurse!spike would be very funny! I imagine that it's a combo of natural instincts and Xander's irresistible charms, and of course money!

I'm pleased that you liked the geek crap part! And you're so right, it would be worth money on ebay!

That's lovely to hear that the pausing worked for you, it was a moment where I pondered a variety of options but that was the one that insisted on being written! Ooh, I bet you're right that Xander will think it's some kind of hallucination. Oh - your mention of the conversation that follows makes me think that this could continue at some point, I must ponder! Thanks for your lovely comment! :D

Aww! I loved this! The geek crap and the shirt patterns were awesome, as was this:

Disappointing. He could have eaten a dead Harris. which was so very Spike.

I love that Spike doesn't think Xander looks disgusting, and that he tries to play along with out of it Xander to get what he wants, but then he's just so matter of fact about the whole thing, which is perfectly Spike.

Xander getting Spike to help by paying him is awesome, and even though you kind of root for Spike being sweet and not taking the cash, of course he does because he wouldn't be Spike otherwise! But the almost forgetting of the money was great.

I loved Spike sleeping with Xander and feeling his forehead, and this:

But there’d better be something wrong with Spike. hee!

Spike checking whether Xander wants the light on was awesome, as was Spike not stopping when Xander calls his name. This was such a fun, could-have-happened little fic!

I'm so very happy that you enjoyed this! I'm pleased you found that line very Spike, and that you found his actions in character! I can sometimes find Spike a challenge to write, so that's especially rewarding to hear. Although once I do get in the Spike zone it can be very fun!

Oooh, that's excellent to hear about the rooting for Spike to not take the cash, and that you liked him almost forgetting the money.

That's great that the line amused you! And yay for liking how it ends. Thanks so much for your lovely comment!! :D

“I like money.” He reaches for the water.

That was so good! I loved this phrase, don't ask me why. I just can picture Spike, looking mildly annoyed, and then smirking in that 'come fuck me, you know you want it' way he has, as he says "I like money."
cordelianne From: cordelianne Date: February 28th, 2007 06:44 am (UTC) (Link)
I'm pleased that you enjoyed and that you like that phrase! That's really awesome that you have such a vivid image of Spike - that's an especially awesome look that he has! Thanks! :D

I'm so happy that you enjoyed and that it put you back in the basementy frame of mind!! I love those various aspects of Spike and how he shifts between them, so it's lovely to hear that I captured that. Thanks so much! :D

Oh, I like this very much! It hit all the right notes for these two in S4. I really enjoyed listening to Spike's train of thought. And hee to Xander having nothing of any value to steal. Clearly Spike should have already known that ;>
cordelianne From: cordelianne Date: February 28th, 2007 06:51 am (UTC) (Link)
I'm very pleased to hear it hit the right notes for the two of them in S4 - that can be a tricky thing to accomplish so it's especially great to hear! Yay to enjoying Spike's train of thought (always fun to write) and Xander not having anything to steal. heee - Spike really should have known!! Thanks so much! :D

Oh yay!! I'm so happy that you love this Spike! I'd previously been having difficulty writing Spike (in another fic I'm working on) but when I sat down to write this, it was just so much fun. I'm pleased you like that line!

And yay to enjoying the fic!!! I'm so happy it lifted your spirits today, now I can feel better about it being so late! ;) And you're so sweet to rec it - thanks so much! Happy very belated birthday!! *hugs*

Enjoyed muchly

heee - well, you know Spike, not so good with the complicated plans. I expect he actually thought this would work - and it almost did. Of course most of Spike's plans almost work! Thanks so much!! :D
