Courage my friends, 'tis never too late to build a better world

Today is a sad day for Canadians, Torontonians and Jack Layton's family and friends. Early this morning, NDP leader and Canada's Official Opposition leader passed away from cancer at 61. Not only did he lead the left-leaning NDP to a strong opposition against the Conservative party earlier this year (the best results ever for the NDP), he was passionate, inspirational and well-loved by all (regardless of politics). My headline title was said by trailblazing early NDP leader, Tommy Douglas, who Jack Layton always quoted, and I am certain that Layton leaves a similar inspiring legacy.

I cried this morning and am very sad to hear of Jack Layton's passing. I remember voting for him as a Toronto city councilor many year ago and my respect for him continued throughout his career. He fought for the homeless, the environment, gay rights, and for all people without a voice. His passion and fighting spirit are inspirations to us all. My condolences to his family. We have all lost a great man.

In his final days, Layton wrote a letter which aimed to inspire us all (and I believe it has). His moving and inspiring last words:

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.

All my very best,

Jack Layton

Rest in peace Jack Layton, I'm wearing orange in your honour today.
