A fiend with magical bunny-like powers
For once a category where I have an easy decision! I was more a reader as a child, and I watched minimal television until I was 10 or 11 and discovered my television love.

Day 13 - Favorite childhood show

I know that I watched the great Canadian children's shows Mr. Dressup and The Friendly Giant but don't remember much about them. So my selection is oddly appropriate considering the reference on tonight's Glee's finale (quoted above) .....

Little House on the Prairie

I'll be honest, I don't remember much about the actual show. I was a much bigger fan of the books, which I've read multiple times, so they are the Little House on the Prairie in my mind. I fell in love with Laura Ingalls Wilder and her pa in the books so it was hard not to love them in the show.

You may be asking why I picked a show that I don't remember very well and when I clearly preferred the books better.

For one reason: my grandpa.

Whenever I'd visit my grandparents, my grandpa and I would watch the show together. The act of watching the show with my grandpa and seeing the girls running (and falling) down the hill in the credits is such a fond and clear memory of mine (here's the link for the credits). I am lucky to have lots of great memories of my time with my grandpa, and this is one of them. For people who think that TV is anti-social, I feel this counters that. I learned at an early age how great it is to share enjoyment with someone special.

And, yes, I did see the Little House musical with Melissa Gilbert (Laura on the show) as Ma. Interestingly it was more faithful to the books than the show, which pleased me. Although sadly not a great musical.

Oops, so I actually got rid of my relevant TV icon (of How I Met Your Mother) but this icon is at least relevant to my selection!

Day 12 - An episode you've watched more than 5 times

I can imagine that this might be a tricky selection for some people, but I'm someone who LOVES to reread and rewatch things. If something is good I always find myself getting something new out of it on repeated viewings/readings! I have seen the majority of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes at *least* five times. Same for all of Firefly and some Angel episodes. I also think that thanks to reruns there's definitely episodes of The Simpsons and Friends that meet this too. But I want to pick something that really stands out!

First my honourable mentions:

- The "Self-Esteem" ep of My So-Called Life. Aka Angela (Claire Danes) and Jordan Catalano (Jared Leto) make out in the boiler room for most of the episode. Enough said.

- "Jump" from season 1 of Joan of Arcadia. This became the episode which I would show people to convince them that this is an amazing show. Everything is perfectly balanced in this ep: humour, sadness, real life issues that aren't resolved easily, the questioning of God and spirituality, and most of all hope and love.

- "Modern Warfare" from Community. Definitely the best episode from this season with its perfect homage to every action and survivalist movie.

And my official selection is.....

"Something Borrowed" (season 2, episode 21) of How I Met Your Mother

So why did I pick the wedding episode of a sitcom, you may be asking. Here's the thing: if there's one cliche that's been cliched-to-death on TV it's wedding episodes. There's always a 50-50 chance of either heartbreak or happy ending. For some reason, there's frequently someone who speaks up at the "speak now or forever hold your peace" part of the ceremony and always someone rushing to get there at the last minute. OR it's just hopelessly smultzy.

How HIMYM rocked the wedding episodeCollapse )

In the first few seasons of Veronica Mars I would have agreed with that quote but in the 3rd (and final) season not so much. Also, my icon only applies to the first two seasons. Which brings us to today's TV topic:

Day 11 - A show that disappointed you

Yep, Veronica Mars is my choice for disappointing show. Sure I could have picked something like Battlestar Galactica which had an immensely disappointing resolution to its brilliantly written show and fascinating mythology. But, to be honest, I'm still too bitter about how it ended to write clearly, whereas I remain disappointed in Veronica Mars.

When Veronica Mars emerged on the scene I was very excited! Here was a show with a strong female protagonist, who without superpowers could consistently save the day. As well as being a beautifully shot, noir style show especially in its practically perfect first season, it had genuinely intriguing and surprising mysteries and an excellent cast. Veronica (Kristen Bell), her dad (Enrico Colantoni), Wallace (Percy Daggs III) and Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring) were particular standouts. An intelligent show with an intelligent heroine - I was hooked!

While the second season wasn't as brilliant as the first, I still enjoyed it. However, it wasn't until the third season when the wheels came off, spun out of control and destroyed the show. My frustration with Veronica MarsCollapse )

I'm trying to remember to keep up posting this TV meme and today's topic is:

Day 10 - A show you thought you wouldn't like but ended up loving

I haven't really had that in a long time because I tend to read a lot about TV and have a good idea of what a show is like before watching it. I've given shows a chance that I didn't love immediately, such as The Big Bang Theory, Community and the Vampire Diaries but I started watching them with the sense I would like them.

Probably what most qualifies is a show that I refused to watch back when I was a pretentious snobby high schooler:

I ended up getting into the show thanks to reruns and did watch the last few seasons as they aired, but I was totally disinterested initially. A show about a bunch of white, seemingly well-off New Yorkers seemed totally obnoxious to me. What I didn't expect was to find the show genuinely funny and be impressed at the character development over the seasons. In particular, Jennifer Anniston's Rachel had a fantastic and believable transformation from materialistic spoiled rich girl to capable career woman and single mom.

Friends is the show I can turn on whenever I need a laugh. It's like comfort TV for me: I know it'll cheer me up as I relax into a funny, silly world where I actually care about the characters (except for possibly Ross in the later seasons who I feel they made very unlikeable). I'm a huge fan of the Monica and Chandler romance and think it was a smart decision and I enjoyed it more than the "we were on a break" arguing of Ross and Rachel.

One of my favourite episodes is the Thanksgiving one where Rachel makes Trifle with beef in it!! It always cracks me up. Check out some of the funny from that ep.

I normally have daily encounters with weirdness in Toronto but today's may beat them all:

I almost couldn't go to yoga because there was a "suspicious package" and a huge part of the downtown was closed off by the police. Amazingly enough 10 mins before class started, everything was cleared and I got to go to class.

Anyway, on to TV. Oh my goodness, today's topic is such a hard one, I've been mulling over it all day:

Day 09 - Best scene ever

I could probably answer all of these types of questions with answers from Buffy the Vampire Slayer but that seems silly considering the ridiculous amount of TV that I watch. And just because I didn't want to include Buffy, it didn't stop me from pondering this scene:

- The season two finale of BtVS where Angel regains his soul but the world's still going to end so Buffy has enough time to kiss him and tell him to close his eyes before sending him to hell.

In which I ponder more and finally reveal my choice. My icon may be a hint!Collapse )

Oh my god, I'm so tense about work stuff that my shoulders are sore and feel like they're at my ears. Not fun, I tell you! In case you missed it, over the weekend, I posted some Faux FAQs here.

So today's topic is, I think, probably not possible to accurately answer:

Day 08 - A show everyone should watch

People have very different tastes, so telling my brother he should watch Gilmore Girls? That's not gonna happen, plus I know he doesn't like it despite how awesome I know the show is. Same as trying to convince my mom that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a brilliant show which she must watch. No matter how much she believes me, she isn't going to watch it and if she did, she likely wouldn't enjoy.

I pondered trying to think of a show that would appeal to the most demographics and I can think of something like Modern Family, which is funny, smart and a genuinely modern comedy. However, I have friends who don't like comedies and find them too cringe-worthy, so that still wouldn't cover it. So instead, I'm going to select a show that's given me a lot of pleasure this season and I think would appeal to most of my fellow TV-lovers here on LJ:

The Vampire Diaries!Collapse )

Inspired by my favourite person ever, savoytruffle, I thought it would be fun to share my own completely fabricated “FAQs”.

1. What’s up with your username sounding like some fandom version of Brangelina?

I swear that I came up with cordelianne way before Brangelina! Basically the name is inspired by smooshing together Cordelia from the classic Anne of Green Gables quote, "Will you please call me Cordelia?", and my use of Anne as a pseudonym at work (because my real name would inspire customers to try and chat me up about how great my RL name is and then come on to me in graphic terms – because I sounded so nice! (See #2 for why customers would do this.)) I’m cool with being called either Cordelianne or Cordy.

So, Cordy, why the hell did you have customers hitting on you over the phone? What do you do?Collapse )

I actually had to edit this because I rambled on too much, so I’m more than happy to answer any questions you have because clearly I love talking about myself!

It's suddenly become summer here. I swear like a week ago, it was chilly March weather and now, "bam", summer! I've been reminded of my least favourite part of summer: freezing inside because the AC is cranked so high (especially at work and movie theatres). I am currently wearing a sweater and drinking tea to stay warm. Crazy!

This whole going away for 4 days without internet or my PVR has made me hopelessly behind on a lot of my TV shows. Randomly I am up on who won Dancing with the Stars - why? I don't really know. Why didn't I watch Glee or Parenthood or the Good Wife instead? Oh well, that's what the weekend is for! Well, that and babysitting my favourite baby in the whole world, my non-biological nephew Jake, who can now crawl and stand (while holding onto something) and who still has a smile that can melt me.

Late last night I returned from a wonderful long weekend up in Muskoka! I drove up with two of my best friends, Tera and Amy, for a time away from the city, especially for Tera who needs a break from stress, and to help out Amy's dad a bit. We stayed at the house Amy grew up in (and her dad still lives in) which is an old two-storey cottage style house that looks out on Lake Rousseau. During out time there we:

- Slept A LOT. Wow, did I need sleep!
- Read. I got a lot of school reading done which was good.
- Talked and talked. Amy's dad, Paul, is a big talker, loves to tell stories and share odd facts.
- Ate great vegetarian meals made by excellent cook Tera. Even Paul enjoyed the vegetarian food, it was a hit!
- Listened to old music and comedic recordings. Paul has this ENORMOUS phonograph collection with all these cylinders of recordings. It's like a museum there's that many records, cylinders and phonographs. It's reason enough to visit just for that!
- Rode in a 1914 Model T!!! Paul took us out for two trips, one was especially long and it was to Bala to a LM Montgomery museum!!! Riding in a Model T is incredibly fun and we had the perfect weather for it; when it's hot out, you are perfectly cooled riding in a Model T.
- Spent at least two hours in the LM Montgomery museum which this couple have created because of the time LMM spent in Muskoka, which inspired one of my favourites The Blue Castle. We have lots of fun photos we took there that hopefully I'll remember to post later! Plus they have an incredible collection of old, rare and first editions of the books - I was in heaven! And even left with my own first edition of the 1911 The Story Girl to add to my LMM collection of old, rare and first editions.
- Went for a ride in a Dippy, which is a traditional Muskoka boat, the disappearing propeller boat. Paul is an expert on Dippys and used to run a business that repaired them.
- Helped out around the place on an old deck, plus I dusted in the house.
- Watched the Lost season finale! Amy got us reception for CTV and we watched it on an old TV with rabbit ears. It felt so old school! I cried and ultimately was pleased. I'll likely have more to say after I've had a chance to rewatch and reflect more.

It was an incredible weekend, it was hard to leave!

But I should remember to do my TV meme!!

Tonight I'm heading up to Muskoka (beautiful cottage country north of Toronto) with my BFFs Amy and Tera. It'll be great to get out of the city and relax with good friends. Sadly there will be no internet but I'm sure I'll survive somehow!

Hmm, so this is a tricky question today:
Day 05 - A show you hate

Despite watching a crazy amount of TV there is still a lot that I don't watch, most of it because they're just not shows I'm interested. I'm not really someone who likes things about law and order, or medical scenarios. So, that eliminates a lot of shows! The other issue is that if something bores me or I think it's stupid, I don't have an issue with other people enjoying it - we all have different tastes and that's cool! So I tried to think of what I will try to flick off quickly if it's on (and will eliminate shows with lots of gore cause that just grosses me out) and that gives me....

I have never seen a whole episode of this sorry excuse for a show but what I have seen absolutely appalls me. Okay, so I should note that I really don't like the whole paparazzi culture (and totally think that we - as consumers - are just as responsible for it as the paparazzi are) but this show takes it to a whole new awful level. So it starts with a bunch of the "journalists" (ha!) at TMZ.com discussing story ideas and writing them on the board, and what appalls me is that they'll laugh at the people they're talking about, ie. "Some D-level 'celebrity' you've never heard of was walking his dog and when of our camera guys got in his face, he told him to 'Fuck off' - haha, what a loser!" I'm like "Yeah, he's the loser, not you guys who stalk poor people who are just out living their lives trying to mind their own business." I've watched that part of the show through in absolute horror. The candid things they catch tend to always seem really stalkery and creepy and not actually interesting celebrity journalism. Man, I really hate that show!

Heh, so apparently a busy weekend made me forget I'm trying to do this meme every day! And since it's Tuesday, I'm clearly not doing well with this! Oops!

Day 03 - Your favorite new show (aired this TV season)
Since I listed Community yesterday, I want to go with a different choice. I'm torn between Parenthood, Vampire Diaries, Glee and the Good Wife and have ultimately decided to go with...

This is a show that reminds me what I loved about shows like Joan of Arcadia, Everwood and Gilmore Girls: an engaging family dynamic, stellar writing and excellent acting from a strong ensemble cast. What's neat is how ultimately functional the family of Parenthood is. Sure they have their issues but I never feel so bogged down by seriousness on the show that I leave it depressed, instead I normally finish with a smile on my face. Of course, this doesn't mean that there isn't touching scenes, I've cried more than once watching this show. In particular, the storyline of Max having Asperger's is handled with seriousness and there's been some incredibly moving scenes related to it, but we also get moments of humour and happiness. I'm impressed at how well the show balances the feeling of realism with entertaining TV. I'm so happy this show was renewed for a second season!

I'm back to the TV meme and this one was an easy decision for me:

Day 02 - A show that you wish more people were watching

Community is absolutely hysterical and is filled with pop culture references. It's a movie/tv fans dream come true! So many homages each week it can be hard to keep track, which makes it a great show to rewatch. It's a show that has me laughing out loud multiple times at the witty lines, the ridiculous scenarios and the references. It has quickly risen to become one of my favourite shows.

A random few awesome lines:
“Did the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants poison each other’s food so they were too sick to leave? No. I’ve never seen it, but I’m pretty sure they mailed each other pants!” — Jeff

Troy: I think I’m failing psychopharmacology.
Britta: Why are you taking that?
Troy: I thought it was a class about crazy farm animals.

“You’re more of a fun vampire because you don’t suck blood. You just suck.” Troy

I am thrilled - and totally filled with nerves - to finally post my first Chekov/Sulu fic.

Title: It's Not Going to Stop ('Til You Wise Up)
Author: cordelianne
Fandom: Star Trek XI
Pairing(s): Chekov/Sulu
Rating: Adult
Word count: 7,534
Disclaimer: Sadly not mine, in any way.
Summary: Sulu and Chekov aren’t friends. In fact, Sulu suspects that Chekov hates him. That doesn’t stop them from getting it on.
Warnings: Awkward mealtime encounters, Jim providing romantic advice, pushy Chekov and confused Sulu.
Notes: Thanks so much to both savoytruffle and reremouse for their cheerleading, feedback, multiple readings and betas. I especially appreciate it considering that savoytruffle is a die-hard Kirk/McCoy shipper and had to deal with naked Chekov. Also greatly appreciated is reremouse, who provided her helpful TOS knowledge despite not being as excited by STXI as I am.
The title is from the Aimee Mann song Wise Up.

Last night I was bored while watching both House and Dancing with the Stars yet continued to watch them. On the weekend (while resting to try and heal my incredibly painful heel spur) I watched all of Caprica and never totally got into it. What's up with the completely inconsistent 1950s style? Why do only some characters have this style and other people look like they fit into modern day Vancouver (heh, that may be because I couldn't get over how clear it was that the show is filmed in Vancouver!)? And what's up with the crazy completely illogical decisions the characters make? I also caught up on V and was equally disengaged.

Fortunately not all TV is boring me. Vampire Diaries continues to surprise me by how good it is! Parenthood has a deft blend of drama and comedy and real emotions - I totally cry every episode. The Good Wife continues to be high quality. Lost continues to have me in its grip - I can't believe it's ending soon! And I am delighted by all the good comedies out right now: The Middle, Modern Family, Cougar Town, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Community and Parks and Recreation.

I suspect I may now only be watching Flashforward for John Cho, but is that really so bad? He's very pretty - haha, that's such an understatement for me as my girlfriend can attest! I've been following this awesome site Fuck Yeah John Cho which has all these great pics of him - it always makes me happy! It also may be responsible for me finally buying the Harold and Kumar movies which I've inexplicably never seen despite my love for John Cho, Kal Penn and Neil Patrick Harris.

The reason I got the movies is because the Blockbuster near my house is shutting down (cause: high Toronto rents and the Internet changing the way people watch movies) and is having a BIG SALE! Like the other people who couldn't resist the lure of cheap prices, I descended on the store and got 6 movies: Zombieland, The Time Traveler's Wife, Bright Star, the two Harold and Kumar movies and Wedding Crashers. With the exception of Wedding Crashers I haven't seen any of the movies but the prices were the equivalent of one rental. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing The Time Traveler's Wife because I'm almost done reading the book and am intrigued to see how it's adapted. I'm really enjoying the book and am close enough to the end that I'm getting sad that it'll be over.

Since I'm in a random mood I thought I'd do the meme that's circulating. Plus, I'm inviting everyone to ask me questions! I'm feeling in a share-y mood so ask away! Want to know my thoughts on a fandom subject? My current new favourite TV show? What I thought of Avatar? Ask me!

At work yesterday we were talking about our TV boyfriends/girlfriends. I naturally have 3 right now - cause I clearly have a lot of love!

My TV boyfriend:
John Cho/Demetri Noh on Flashforward

My TV girlfriends:
Tina Fey/Liz Lemon - So excited about Date Night!
Archie Panjabi/Kalinda Sharma on the Good Wife

I also love Damon on Vampire Diaries but his whole killing ways don't make him TV boyfriend material. Even with fictional characters I have standards!

Who are yours? And why is it so cold in my office today? brrrr

In honour of my Lost icon, I must note how much I'm loving the show. This was one of the only times when sticking with a show that was disappointing me (hello parts of S2 & S3) actually paid off! (Unlike, with say Smallville and Grey's Anatomy.) This season of Lost has been fantastic! I'm loving the new angle on things and how things are developing. Last night's episode was awesome - I hope things continue the way they're going!
